At first Choosing the Right Grass Seed

In the past decade, people only used Zoysia grass sod, sprigs, plugs, etc., of old methods to grow. But all of them are prohibited methods of planting. Now, thanks to new ways of growing grass, planting high-quality Zoysia grass seed is easy and affordable.

When you want to buy seed, first look for seed that has “coated.” This means the coated seed layer helps it keep moisture and stay healthy for germination. Always check the minimum label characteristics to make sure that it has a good germination rate and no negative impact on seeds. If you buy seed from the start accurately, you will not have a patchy lawn later.
Physical Appearance: Make sure coated or hulled seed. Uncoated or uncovered seed should be avoided.
Environmental Affect: Needs a moist environment at least 70°F (21°C) to germinate

1. Zoysia japonica

Zoysia Japonica

Another it has small blades and can spread over the lawn evenly and low cost alternative to Bermuda grass. It is native to South Asia and grassland area as the Chinese region and South Korea most common turf grasses. It was first introduced in the United States in 1895. It is used in yards, parks, and golf pitch areas, horse riding areas mostly.

How to Plant Zoysia Grass Seed?

Zoysia grows in almost any weather, but late summer is discouraged. Here are the simple steps to plant it:

Pick the Right Time: Plant in spring or early summer when the soil is warm and moist. It takes 14 to 21 days (2-3 wks) to germinate.

Prep the Soil: Remove all the weeds, rocks, and old grass. Make the dirt smooth and flat. It is a common problem of grub attraction. So, it is recommended to eliminate all grubs to grow your lawn grass accurately.

Spread the Seed: Use a lawn spreader to put the seed evenly. Use 1 to 2 pounds of seed for every 1,000 square feet of lawn.

Press It In: Zoysia seeds need sunlight to grow, so do not bury them. Just roll the lawn gently. Rake it lightly so the seeds touch the soil.

Water Frequently: Keep the soil damp but not too wet. The researchers suggest that 12–2+12 inches (1.3–6.4 cm) every 5–10 days is good for irrigation.

The Best Fertilizer for Zoysia Grass

Zoysia is a slow-growing grass, so it does not need a lot of fertilizer. If you give it too much, it can make a thick layer of dead grass.

The Best Blend

Look for a lawn fertilizer with a mix like 15-0-15 or 16-4-8.

Nitrogen: This helps the grass stay green and grow. Zoysia only needs a bit of nitrogen. It approximately states that 2-4 pounds of N₂ are needed every 1000 square feet.

Phosphorus: This helps the roots grow. You only need it if your soil is bad. Otherwise, better to not use.

Potassium: This helps the grass stay strong and healthy during summer days.

When to Fertilize?

Put fertilizer on your lawn in spring when it is fully green and growing. Do not fertilize in spring when the grass is still sleeping. You can give in mid-summer but not in late fall because it can hurt the new growth.

Conclusion

Zoysia grass is a choice for people who want a fine turf, beautiful and easy-to-care-for lawn. It takes some patience when you first plant the seed. The result is a healthy lawn that lasts for years. If you follow care tips and feed your lawn at the right time, your lawn project will be a big success.
